To celebrate the one year anniversary of Urban Views Weekly, we’ve been featuring our Contributors each week during the months of June and July. Next week, we’ll finish the series with a profile of Andie Radford. This week, meet Cheryl Williams.
She started college later than some. But Cheryl Williams has always known what she was born to do. “I’ve been writing since I was a kid,” she says. “I was into art as well. But writing has always been something I’ve been naturally good at and it’s cathartic for me.”
It took a boost of confidence from a trusted friend to convince her to share her work with the world. “My best friend, she pushed me in the right direction,” Cheryl remembers. “I was writing just for myself personally. I got good grades in English, but I just really didn’t have the confidence to say, ‘Hey, I’m going to do something with my talent. I have just recently come around to an epiphany that I need to do something with this God-given talent.’”
In June, Cheryl contributed the uplifting Urban Views Weekly feature on African American equestrians. Recently, she wrote a poignant tribute to Michael Jackson. A freshman at John Tyler Community College, she plans to study mass communication at Virginia Commonwealth University after she earns her Associate’s Degree. With life experience and maturity, she’s committed to her education.
