The James River Advisory Council will present its “Forgotten History Lecture Series” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at the American Civil War Center located at Historic Tredegar, 500 Tredegar Street in Richmond. The lecture is sponsored by its diversity committee.
Benjamin Ross, church historian, of the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, will give a lecture highlighting the extraordinary life of the Reverend John Jasper who lived from 1812-1901. He will also introduce the river as a place of spiritual relevance, citing it as a place used for ceremonies such as baptisms and often referred to for spiritual solace.
Born into slavery on July 4, 1812, Jasper became the founding pastor of the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, and was celebrated throughout the city of Richmond and the state of Virginia. During his career, he preached to thousands of listeners (black and white) who wanted to experience his unique style of religious oratory. His most well-known sermon was “De Sun Do Move.” Newspapers promoted Jasper by regularly announcing his appearances.
