Although not a disease, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control list nutrition as a health concern for African Americans in the country. Proper nutrition is key in maintaining a healthy weight (which is important in avoiding other conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure), having enough energy and enabling your body to function at its best.
Some African American communities have a hard time maintaining good nutrition because fresh and healthy foods are not easily accessible, whether it be because of geography or finances. Areas where grocery stores are not close are called food deserts. Government agencies have been working to identify these areas and many private groups have developed traveling farmer’s markets to bring healthy eating to neighborhoods.
Even with the proper foods, it may be challenging to know what to do with them. This is where we can help: With Martin’s grocery stores, we can provide fun, new recipes for inexpensive and healthy meals for families. Look out for them in the future!
