Virginia State University’s men’s cross country team combined for 83 team points, placing second overall at the 2012 CIAA Cross Country Championships held in Cary, NC at WakeMed soccer Park on Thursday, Oct. 18th. Four Trojans finished in the top 20 runners, led by Prince Owusu-Mensah’s (So./Woodbridge, VA) ninth place finish in 27:07.30.
St. Augustine’s won the men’s title with an overall team score of 48 points. The Trojans followed in second place (83), while Bowie State took third place with 106 points. Winston-Salem State placed a close fourth (107), Shaw was fifth (110), Lincoln placed sixth (133), and Fayetteville State placed seventh (179). Chowan placed eighth (214), Johnson C. Smith placed ninth (227), Livingstone tenth (231), Virginia Union eleventh (260), and Elizabeth City State finished twelfth with 333 points.
VSU’s Prince Owusu-Mensah carried the Trojans to a second place finish placing ninth individually in 27:07.30. Three Trojan runners finished in consecutive order as LeMontre Taylor (So./Goochland, VA) ran 28:08.70 placing sixteenth, Chris Henry (R-So./Upper Marlboro, MD) ran 28:11.70, placing seventeenth, and Justin Pittman (So./ Dale City, VA) ran 28:14.00, placing eighteenth individually.
Virginia State University’s women’s cross country team combined for 68 team points, placing third overall at the 2012 CIAA Cross Country Championships. Taylor-Ashley Bean (R-Fr./ Sandys, Bermuda) won the individual 5K Run with an overall time of 19:27.90.
St. Augustine’s won the women’s title with an overall team score of 44 points. Winston-Salem State placed second with 48 points, while the Lady Trojans placed third (68). Lincoln followed with a fourth place finish (113), Chowan placed fifth (157), Bowie State sixth (183), Livingstone seventh (195), and Shaw placed eighth (225). Fayetteville State followed finishing ninth (247), Johnson C. Smith placed tenth (257), Virginia Union placed eleventh (260), and Elizabeth City State finished twelfth with 338 points.
Three Lady Trojans ranked in the top-10 leading VSU to a third place finish. Taylor-Ashley Bean won the women’s 5K run in 19:27.9. Samantha Edwards (Sr./Elmont, NY) finished fourth overall in 20:00.00 and Shannon Lewis (Jr./Yorktown, VA) finished sixth overall in 20:14.30. All three Lady Trojan runners were named to the 2012 All-CIAA Cross Country Women’s Team.
