Just in time to welcome troops home for the holidays, local volunteers recently donated their time and skills to help make over the USO (United Service Organizations) center in Ft. Lee. The Ft. Lee project was one of 16 makeovers being conducted by volunteers who are part of “Lowe’s Heroes”, a company-wide volunteer initiative that offers Lowe’s employees the opportunity to work on a project in their own communities. Lowe’s volunteers led renovation projects, with the support of vendor partners Valspar paint and Mohawk carpet. The newest USO center at Ft. Lee is expected to welcome 12,000 to 15,000 active duty service members and their families each month.

“We are grateful Lowe’s supports our mission, which is to enhance the quality of life of the U.S. Armed Forces personnel and their families,” said Bruce LaLonde, President and CEO of the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia.

While many believe that the USO is a government agency, in fact, it’s a private, non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors to provide a touch of home through centers at airports and military bases, top quality entertainment and other programs and services.
