Virginia Union University defeated Lincoln University (Pa.) 78-13 on Saturday, October 11, at Hovey Field, Richmond. The 78 points are the most points scored by a VUU football team since Virginia Union defeated Morgan State University 85-0 in 1921. VUU set a school record with 697 offensive yards, breaking the school record of 623 yards set against Norfolk State University in 1992.
The VUU Panthers scored 11 touchdowns, breaking the single-game school record of 10 against Lincoln in 1960. VUU kicker Troy Krepich set a school record with 10 extra points, breaking the previous record of 9 scored against Lincoln in 2008. Krepich also set a record by attempting 11 extra points, breaking the school record of 10 against Livingstone in 1980.
VUU’s Cassious McDowell rushed for 174 yards on nine carries, including four touchdowns. McDowell’s average of 19.5 yards per carry was the second-highest single-game total in VUU history set against Saint Paul’s College in 1976.
Virginia Union scored first with a nine-yard pass from Kenneth Graham to Donte Gross. VUU would go on to lead at halftime 44-13. Graham completed 14 of 25 passes for 338 yards and two touchdowns. Graham’s longest pass of the day was a 50-yard touchdown strike to Eric Shaw in the second quarter.
Shawheem Dowdy came into the game in the third quarter and went 2-for-2, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jussie York. York caught two touchdown passes, while teammate Devonte Miller led the Panthers with 86 yards on three receptions.
VUU now leads with 5-1 overall and 3-0 in CIAA Northern Division play. Virginia State University, which is also 3-0 in the Northern Division, is 4-2 overall. Lincoln fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the CIAA Northern Division.
The Virginia Union University Panthers will travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to face Chowan University at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18.
