In the middle of a hectic work day, I decided to enjoy a momentary lull in my schedule and visit some of my coworkers. I was in need of a change in scenery and normally this is a wonderful way of reviving me. I sat next to the window in my favorite cushioned back chair and observed the work space, the faces, the turquoise muted walls, the modern designed upholstery, the plants and the light streaking through the shades. My breathing slowed down as I appreciated the atmosphere.
Next to one of my coworkers was her Mother’s Day gift – a plant from her little boy. It’s a wonderful reminder of simple abundance –the love of nature and family.
I remarked that the plant needed water. She said she’d just watered the plant and already it was reviving. I began to reflect on how water quenches our thirst, revives us, restores and can renew us. She then pointed out that the plant was growing on one side very noticeably because it was growing in the direction of the light. I immediately said, “Girls, did you hear that?”
We all laughed, not necessarily because it was side splitting humor, but because we instantly understood the “ah-ha” moment! We were reveling in the divine spiritual implications of what our ears heard and our hearts received.
Ask yourself: Am I moving in a direction that feeds my soul? Why am I feeling a bit lackluster about life? What’s the boost, the enlightenment I need? Possibly you may be withered from life’s grind? What do you long to accomplish that may quench your parched existence, nourish and sustain you? Like the plant, we must experience sustenance. Our minds need stimulation, our muscles need to be flexed and stretched, our hearts vigorously pumped, and our bodies fortified!
Friends, let me suggest starting with the decision to create your own change for a better life. Take walks often, enjoy nature’s splendor, appreciate architecture, experience new scenery by taking a “staycation”, learn a new route home, enjoy the company of some favorite friends, prepare and share a new recipe, make a habit of eating healthier, read inspirational writings, visit art galleries and museums, purposely change the radio station, discover National Public Radio, laugh often, smile more, pray, ask God for guidance and trust that the answer you are seeking will revive and restore your weary soul. Remember, positive change is like drinking a thirst quenching glass of water.
