4th Annual Black Marriage Day
The fourth annual Black Marriage Day in Richmond takes place March 27. Developed in 2001 by Nisa Muhammad of Wedded Bliss Inc. in Washington DC, Black Marriage Day is now celebrated in over 300 cities and communities. The event is free and offers a wealth of information for singles, married and unmarried couples, and teens. Workshops this year include:
•The Effect of Divorce and Separation on Children
• Shackin vs. Gettin Your Papers (Legal Rights for Married and
Cohabitating Couples)
• Ignoring the Signs of a Dysfunctional Relationship
• Teens and Abusive Relationships
• An Elders Council with over 100 years of combined marital wisdom
Richmond organizer Adia Shabazz began organizing Black Marriage Day after attending a Smart Marriages conference where she heard Muhammad speak. Adia was not married at the time, but she wanted to support marriages so she decided to organize a Black Marriage Day celebration in Richmond. Her work to support marriages led her to her own. Today Adia and her husband, Kindu Shabazz co-coordinate Black Marriage Day, as they’ve been doing for four years. Everyone is invited to take part in this exciting event that touches the whole family.
