The high salt diet many of us are accustomed to is linked to high blood pressure and other serious health concerns. Because sodium is added as a preservative, it is high in foods from cans and boxes, in packaged and frozen meals, and restaurant food. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the average adult needs only 2300 mg of sodium each day. According to one cardiologist at the Cardiovascular Prevention Program at Greenwich Hospital, most of us consume three times that amount.
But you can enjoy flavorful food by replacing salt with herb blends and making a few changes at the grocery store.
