Have you ever been invited to a backyard barbecue and the host says “Don’t bring anything” but you feel obligated to do so? So you stop at your local grocer to pick up a bottle of wine. Then when you arrive at the barbecue, you and about twelve other guests had the same idea…White Zinfandel!
First, let me say that there is nothing wrong with White Zinfandel at a barbecue. It is very fruity, refreshing, and a great pairing with traditional cookout fare. But I want to share some other great options to top off the festivities. I will make it easy for you: Most of these should be available at your local grocer so they are great last minute pickups on your way to the event.
Gewurztraminer is a great pick for summer and a pretty good pairing for some of the spicier or more exotic cookout menu items. Immediately, you’ll taste the nutmeg and cloves for which the varietal is known but you’ll also get a hint of tropical fruit and a soft sweetness. One favorite that you can find at most grocers is Chateau Ste. Michelle Gewurztraminer. Chill it and it’s perfect!
