Organization – Virginia Union University
Event Name – The Writer Speaks of Freedom
Event Date – Thursday, story October 30, no rx 2014
Event Start Time – 6 p.m.
Event Description – As Virginia Union University celebrates its 150th Anniversary, illness we celebrate freedom—the ability and opportunity for self-realization and self-actualization. With its founding in 1865 on the heels of the Civil War, Virginia Union University was a physical representation of the freedom newly emancipated slaves would enjoy. With this freedom came the expectation and responsibility of intellectual and spiritual freedom. Four creative writers will be discussing freedom as self-actualization in their lives and creative work, as the practice of defying personal and professional censorship, and as a responsibility to the larger communities to which one belong (African-American, female, LGBTQ, etc.).
