However, medications there are people who are not as excited to be in this season and may suffer from summer depression. WebMD Medical Reference, R. Morgan Griffin suggests seasonal affective disorder or SAD, disrupted routines, body image issues, financial worries, and the heat can cause depression in the summertime. These are things to consider while the summer is upon us.
Seasonal Affective Disorder
While most people are affected by SAD in the winter time with shorter days and colder temperatures, Griffin said 10 percent of people suffer from this disease in the summertime. Symptoms include trouble sleeping, weight loss, anxiety, and loss of appetite.
Routine Breaks
With the younger children out of school and older children home from college, parents’ daily routines can be disrupted in the summertime. While vacations can be enjoyable and are supposed to disrupt normal routines, people eat differently, are not working, and even have different sleep patterns.
Body Image Issues
Summertime means swimsuit season. Many people can feel even more self-conscious about how their bodies appear when forced to wear swimsuits. Not only swimsuits, but shorts and dresses tailored to the summertime can evoke embarrassment.
Finances
Many know summers can be expensive. With children home in the daytime, there is a need for more groceries. Vacations require money for transportation. Summer camps, babysitters, and amusement parks can require more money to be spent than usual. This can cause people to stress more over their finances than during the other seasons of the year.
The Sun
While many prefer warm weather to cold, there are those who find comfort in knowing they will not start to sweat as soon as they walk out of the house. People like this tend to avoid the heat by staying inside. They can develop unhealthy habits, such as sitting around all day watching television and lazy eating habits.
