This is also a slight change to the traditional barbecue. Processed, white, fluffy bread is proven to be unhealthy and has added calories. Wheat buns are not the only choice. Gans also suggested “sandwich thin” buns as a healthy alternative.
Potato Salad
An alternative recipe can be used to modify potato salad. “Try adding white wine vinegar, mustard and a little olive oil in lieu of regular mayonnaise,” Gans said.
Coleslaw
Coleslaw can be a very healthy side item. Using an alternative recipe can increase its nutritional value. While mayonnaise is often used in coleslaw, Gans said, switching that out for nonfat Greek yogurt and adding apple cider vinegar will give it a new flavor and is healthier.
Pickles
Chips are served at almost every cookout. However, a salty, crunchy, and healthy substitute is the pickle. Chopping them up and serving them as slices, instead of chips, will make a much healthier and filling addition to the meal.
