Rev. Dr. Harry E. Simmons, of the Hunter Holmes McGuire Polytrauma Center, has been selected by the American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) Board of Directors from nominations submitted by clergy and laypersons across the United States and Puerto Rico to receive the Merit Award for Institutional Chaplaincy. Professor Simmons has been selected by an august body of his peers for this National Award. The polytrauma center, one of the largest employers in central Virginia, takes great pride in the selection of Dr. Simmons for this National Prestigious award. Professor Simmons will be presented this award at the American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA) Mission Summit/Biennial to be held June 21 – 23, 2013 in Overland Park, Kansas.
Professor Simmons, a 25-year employee of the center, has been the recipient of many national and regional awards as an outstanding member of the ministry. Professor Simmons also has been a longtime Associate Professor of Pastoral Care and the Practice of Ministry at Virginia Union University Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology in Richmond, Virginia, mentoring hundreds of young souls into the ministry and institutional chaplaincy.
Professor Simmons serves on many national, regional, and local boards and currently holds seats on several certification and accreditation boards. They include: Chair, Department of Veterans Affairs National Black Chaplains Association, Board of Directors, Foundation for Clinical Pastoral Education, President Emeritus, the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Racial Ethnic Multicultural Network, Mid-Atlantic ACPE Accreditation and Certification committees, and current Chair, Committee on Chaplains and Pastoral Counselors, ABCUSA to name a few.
The Professor continues in his lifelong work and devotion to others and to his Savior. Professor Simmons is a contributing and positive influence reflecting the attitudes and policies of the Hunter Holmes McGuire medical center.
