I had an interview two weeks ago. The recruiter said that he would get back with everyone last week to let us know whether or not we were chosen for the position. This is an opportunity that I really want, so I want to reach out to the recruiter to find out if a decision has been made. Based on your experience, is that considered too pushy? I’ve heard differing opinions on this and I am interested in your professional perspective.

Dear Anxiously Waiting Feedback,

I don’t think that reaching out to the recruiter is too pushy. The recruiter set the expectation at one week and for whatever reason, hasn’t followed up with you. Reach out to the recruiter and let him know that you did not receive any information last week on your interview. Explain that you want to inquire on your interview status and to learn more about next steps in the process. Always exhibit an attitude of positive expectancy. Expect that you are now a final candidate. Expect to move to the next level of the recruitment process. Expect the recruiter to be excited to hear from you and that he will have good news for you.

However, if you are not chosen as a final candidate, take the time to ask questions and find out why or if there is anything you can do to present yourself more as an ideal candidate in the next opportunity. Also rest assured that all things work out in due time and the real “dream job” is right around the corner!
