One Voice Chorus presents “Shades of Broadway” on Saturday, Nov.20 at 7 pm at Grace Baptist Church, 4200 Dover Rd. More than 100 singers from throughout Metropolitan Richmond will be joined by a Broadway-style “pit orchestra” led by One Voice Artistic Director Glen McCune and Guest Conductor Suzanne Mallory-Parker.
The concert features great songs from three of America’s most famous ground-breaking musicals – Show Boat, South Pacific and West Side Story. These popular shows shattered musical theater stereotypes of their time with honesty, humor and compassion. Set in urban New York of the 1950’s, nineteenth century America after the Civil War, and the anxious days of WWII in the Pacific, each musical portrays epic love stories striving to overcome cultural and racial barriers – often with tragic results.
The audience is invited to arrive one hour before the performance and participate in the pre-concert conversation, “Harmony in Living Black & White,” which focuses on personal opportunities to enhance racial harmony in the Richmond community.
One Voice Chorus was founded in 2002 to bridge historic cultural barriers through shared experiences of great choral music. The large chorus echoes and celebrates the racial diversity of Metropolitan Richmond in its music, mission and membership.
